It was reassuring to learn that though there are lots of wooded areas around where Gracie could hide, there were also lots of people. Surely she would be able to find food and shelter most any place she wandered, and someone would surely be calling with more news soon. She might even find a comfortable place near or in one of the barns where cattle, horses, or other animals are sheltered.

Meanwhile, Momma Jo had a chain of friends praying for Gracie’s protection. She might evade people, but she could not hide from God; so they continually kept a prayer covering over her each day and night.

It had been sixteen days of searching when Connie called early on Tuesday morning to report that a friend had seen Gracie at the intersection of highway 9 and 9W. “My! This dog sure gets around on those little short legs,” she said. She seems to be traveling about a five mile strip of busy highway. That presented a real concern for there were always so many big log trucks or semis plowing down the highway. Also, one car after the other whizzed by almost constantly. What a challenge for a small dog!

Daddy Bob made his way down highway 9 and onto 9W near a business called Paul’s Tires. There was Gracie trotting along the roadside. He stopped gently and began saying her name. She turned to face him and began walking toward him. He thought, “She is going to let me catch her.” Just then, two cars whizzed by and scared her into the woods. “So close,” he thought. “If only the cars had not come at that moment, I think I could have caught her.”
